Falling Behind

Private School Fredericksburg VA

In the last month or so I have received several facebook comments, emails, and phone calls that start something like this “I would love to send my student to BCS but he’s so far behind….” Let me stop you right there, mmmkay? Your student is definitely not behind. No, I haven’t met her. How do I know? Because you know. You are engaged and worried about it. No child this year is more behind than any other. Everyone is starting out in the same boat life raft.

The fact that you’re aware that your child needs more means that they are already on the right path. You care about them, their welfare, their education, and their emotional needs, that in itself gives them a leg up.

I think we can all agree that virtual learning is only working for a handful of students. It is not working for our kids. It is not working for teachers (I see you all working 12+ hours a day, including weekends). It is not working for administrators. It is not working. Full stop. Whose fault is it? Where can we place the blame? Really nowhere. I’m almost certain that 20 years ago school administrators around the country were not sitting in their cozy offices planning what to do in the 2020 pandemic. This is still uncharted territory. Everyone is doing the best they can to get through, out in the middle of the ocean, in a life raft with a million tiny holes, only one paddle, and a sieve to bail the water out.

The really fantastic news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We’re all in that little life raft together. And some really marvelous things have happened too. Like Brompton Community School.

If you feel like you need extra support, ideas for homeschooling, or just someone to listen to your concerns. Please know that we’re here for you. If we don’t have what you need we’ll find someone who does. We truly are here for the community, in whatever capacity that may be in. We’re here for you.

Peace and Love,

Amber + the BCS Team
